In Singapore, Local Craft Breweries Join Forces in a Different Kind of Collaboration

Singapore Craft Breweries Mixed Pack

Update May 11: The first round of #SGCraftTogether mixed packs sold out within days—in some cases hours. A second release will drop on May 14; we have updated the new beer selection, below.

There are occasions when the fruits of collaboration between craft breweries can be more gratifying than what brewers may create together in a brew kettle.

At a time when Singapore’s local craft beer bars and breweries are doing whatever possible to make ends meet during pandemic-driven closures and other restrictions, we’ve repeatedly encouraged our readers to remember to support their local(s). Whether it’s ordering delivery from your favorite craft beer venues or getting good beer directly from a brewery or bottle shop, it all helps ensure these joints will still be around once this nightmare blows over.

Now, in the spirit of collaboration 15 Singapore craft breweries have come together to offer another way to support and explore the local craft beer scene. “We’ve always believed that craft breweries could greatly benefit from cooperating and collaborating with one another, especially through creative projects,” Charles Bennett, co-founder of Wild Brew, tells Beer Travelist. “We’re really proud to be part of this mixed carton initiative, one founded in solidarity during this crisis. I think it’s the beginning of something greater still to come.”

New kids on the brewing block Wild Brew, Alive Brewing Co, and Sunbird Brewing Co are among those local breweries featured in exclusive mixed packs available from May 8 that include a range of ales and lagers. According to Brewlander founder and brewmaster John Wei, beers from 11 breweries will be included in the initial #SGCraftTogether packs, while several other breweries plan to join the mix for the next round.

“I think this is the first time this has been done by local breweries, and it conveys the crazy diversity of beers being produced locally, many of which beer-loving Singapore residents still don’t know about,” says Qing Yang, co-founder of Alive Brewing Co. “Because many of us already offer home delivery, this felt like the right time to launch something like this, and with disruptions to supply chains globally due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I also see this as more forward-looking for local breweries to come together to supply our local market, which is still heavily dependent on imports.”

“The #SGCraftTogether pack is a good showcase of how rich the culture of craft beer is in Singapore,” agrees Clive Tan, founder of Sunbird Brewing Co. “Even though this is the first collaboration, I’m confident that this is the start of something amazing and am honoured to be a part of it.”

Available in six ($39) or 12 packs ($78), these #SGCraftTogether specials can be purchased directly from all participating breweries, while supplies last.  According to the breweries’ collective press release, in an attempt to “celebrate and showcase the quality range of local beers” the actual contents of each pack are at the discretion of each brewery. One 12 pack, for instance, may include one each of the beers listed below, along with one duplicate or perhaps another beer from the chosen brewery’s range.
